On June 6th, Memorial Day, I saw an article about newly-elected President Lee Jae-myung visiting a traditional market nearby. "Another traditional market in Dongjak-gu?" I wondered, only to realize it was none other than Namseong Sage Market, the very place I visited today! It felt like I was on a trip to a local city, or even a traditional market in Japan—familiar yet new, and so incredibly lively. This fantastic Namseong Sage Market is truly a must-see, and I believe foreigners would absolutely love it too!
This market is a treasure trove of unique features:
- Four Seasons Theme: The market is divided into "Spring Path," "Summer Path," "Autumn Path," and "Winter Path," each offering different products and atmospheres. You'll find everything from agricultural and marine products to meat, side dish stores, twisted donuts (kkwabaegi), dumplings, jokbal (pig's trotters), and more. Beyond the market stalls, there's a Daiso, a supermarket, convenience stores, and various restaurants—truly nothing is missing!
- Vibrant Atmosphere: With over 50 years of history, this traditional market absolutely buzzes with energy and life. You can truly feel the vibrant pulse of daily Korean life here.
- Modernization Project: Thanks to support from the government and local authorities, one section of the market has undergone modernization, making it wonderfully clean and organized.
- Excellent Accessibility: It's directly connected to Isu Station Exit 14, making it incredibly easy to reach from anywhere in the city.
- Unbeatable Prices: And most importantly, things are incredibly cheap here! The price difference compared to Bangbae-dong, just across the street, is astonishing. It's even more exciting than a department store or supermarket because you'll suddenly find a corner announcing a huge discount, or a lucky moment at a tteok (rice cake) shop shouting "Any 4 packs for 5,000 won!" It was so much fun. Feeling a bit hungry, I bought some steamed dumplings, kkwabaegi, and tteok, and they were all delicious.
Though it might look calm in photos, this is truly one of the busiest traditional markets I've ever visited! You won't want to miss the energy and incredible finds at Namseong Sage Market.
